Small-mouth bass fishing tips?
June 25, 2009
I am going to a fishing derby strictly for small mouth bass next weekend and I really want to win!! What are some good tips for catching large smallmouth bass? I generally tend to use live bait instead of lures, but I guess i'm willing to try anything. Its a smaller lake keep in mind. Thankss!!!

Got something to say?

With live bait, change it every 10 minutes or less. Gotta keep it active and fresh. And drag it just over the weed beds (Smallie's hunting grounds). Keep your bait in a cooler and away from heat so it won't get sluggish. Good luck.
unless i got largemouth/smallmouth mixed up, try to fish in weedy areas, or a place with a lot of lilypads. Use a lure that looks like a bug, or small fish. try to lightly jerk the rod to give it a more fish-like movement. ONLY A COUPLE TIMES stop reeling so the fish think its wounded.
Small mouth chase bait.. when in clear water over light weeds and rock/gravel bottom I always put on a crank bait on one rod that travels just above the rocks.. and a jerk bait on another.. a worm rig to toss if I get a miss, wightless. When there are two in the boat one is with a grub swimming along the bank and one is casting deeper with the crank or jerk bait up here on MY boat..
Try using a tiny tube jig.
I use a red and white tube with great results.
Jig it as if you were fishing for crappie and you will be surprised!
A small lead head and tube combination will catch some big smallmouth.
Also try crayfish type lures! Smallies Love Them!
Best of luck!
